Safety Tips While Out Shopping

Historically, the holiday season is one of the highest crime periods of the year. During this time many of our thoughts are of food, gifts, gatherings, etc., not on how to best protect ourselves, family and/or business assets. Be alert and aware of your environment. Criminals tend to target people who are not paying attention and that appear to be unaware of their surroundings, i.e. carry packages, fumbling with keys looking at the ground or into space.

Holiday Security and Safety Tips

Take reasonable precautions to protect you and your assets

Before shopping:

  • Use a fanny pack instead of a purse
  • Carry small amounts of cash
  • Carry your keys, cash and credit cards separate from each other
  • Use ATMs in well populated and well-lit areas
  • Consolidate packages when possible

While Shopping:

  • Park strategically – as close to the store entrance as possible. Park in well-lit areas. Avoid parking next to large vehicles, bushes or dumpsters
  • Remember where you park
  • Leave stores well before closing time
  • Shop while you have energy. Stop before you are exhausted
  • Check around, underneath and inside your car as you ap- proach it.
  • Keep your packages stored out of sight in the trunk of your car
  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
  • Don’t overburden yourself with packages.
  • Take extra care with purses and wallets; carry your purse close to your body and your wallet in an inside pocket or zippered pocket.
  • Never leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart, on a counter top or in your car.
  • Don’t carry large amounts of cash and minimize the number of debit or credit cards you carry, to avoid leaving them at a store.
  • Park your car close to your destination and make sure packages are locked in the trunk, out of sight. If you are going to continue shopping, after placing items in the trunk, move your vehicle to another location in the parking lot.
  • Try to shop during daylight hours and when shopping at night, park in a well-lit area.
  • When returning to your car, have your keys out and keep alert. Lock your doors as soon as you are inside the vehicle.
  • Shop with others when possible.
  • If shopping with small children, make sure they know what to do if they become separated from you inside a store or mall.
  • Report suspicious activity to store/mall security or law enforcement.
  • IF SOMETHING OR SOMEONE MAKES YOU UNEASY, TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
